A lawyer testifies he teleported to Mars as a child in DARPA's jump rooms. The claim outran every fact-check.

Imagine a man telling you, completely calmly, that when he was a little boy he traveled through time for the United States government. Not in a dream. Not in a movie. He says it happened, that he walked to Gettysburg in 1863 and stood near Abraham Lincoln, that he glimpsed the future and even the past of the human race -- all as part of a secret program run out of a defense laboratory. That man is Andrew Basiago, and the legend he tells is called Project Pegasus. Here's the story as he lays it out. Basiago, a lawyer from Washington State, says that in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as a young child, he was recruited into a classified DARPA project -- DARPA being the very real Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon's blue-sky research arm. He claims Project Pegasus had cracked both teleportation and time travel, using a device he says was based on papers left behind by the inventor Nikola Tesla. According to Basiago, children were used as test subjects because their developing bodies could better withstand the strain of 'jumping.' He says he was sent to witness historical events, and even claims he later teleported to a secret U.S. base -- on Mars. So here's where it gets strange. Basiago hasn't kept this quiet. He's described it in interviews, at conferences, on radio programs, and he even ran for President of the United States on the promise of disclosing hidden truths. He talks about it the way you'd describe a summer job -- specific, unshaken, sincere. And that sincerity is a big part of why the legend has traveled so far. But here's the part you need to hear plainly. There is no evidence whatsoever that Project Pegasus existed. DARPA is real and its work is often startling, but nothing in the public record -- no document, no witness, no declassified file -- supports the existence of a childhood time-travel or teleportation program, and there is no verified U.S. base on Mars. The photographs and papers Basiago points to have not held up to independent scrutiny. What we have is essentially one man's personal testimony, offered as recovered memory, with no corroboration behind it. And that's exactly how you should hold it: as an unverified claim, a modern piece of folklore built by a single storyteller, not as anything established. It's worth saying that clearly and without mockery -- Basiago tells it earnestly, and plenty of sincere people believe sincerely wrong things. The interesting question isn't whether it's true; the honest answer is that there's no reason to think it is. The interesting question is why a story like this grips us at all -- the fusion of a real, secretive agency with the oldest human fantasy of touching the past.
