Ordo Templi Orientis

A magical order whose California lodge, improbably, helped birth the space age.

But here's the thing: the Ordo Templi Orientis is not a rumor. It's a real, documented organization, and if you follow its paper trail, it leads you straight to one of the most infamous men who ever lived. So let's start with the facts. The Ordo Templi Orientis, Latin for the Order of the Temple of the East, or the Order of Oriental Templars, was founded in the early 1900s, largely through the efforts of an Austrian industrialist named Carl Kellner and a German occultist and former spy named Theodor Reuss. It was built on a Masonic template, meaning it used a ladder of initiatory degrees, secret handshakes, ritual, and hierarchy. To climb the ladder, you advanced through the grades. Now here's where it gets strange. Around 1910, a young English magician walked through the door, and the whole order would never be the same. That man was Aleister Crowley, your neighbor on this map, the self-styled 'wickedest man in the world.' Reuss recognized something in him, granted him a charter, and eventually placed him in charge of the British section. When Reuss died in 1923, Crowley maneuvered himself into the position of Outer Head of the Order, the O.H.O., the worldwide leader. And Crowley did something dramatic. He rewrote it. He fused the O.T.O. with his own religious philosophy, Thelema, whose central creed is 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.' That phrase comes from his 1904 revelation, The Book of the Law. He composed the order's central public ceremony, the Gnostic Mass, or Liber XV, a theatrical rite still performed today. Under Crowley, the O.T.O. wasn't just a fraternal club anymore; it was the vehicle for a new religion. And it spread. It crossed the Atlantic. In Southern California, a lodge called the Agape Lodge took root in Pasadena, and its most famous member was a brilliant, doomed rocket scientist named Jack Parsons, another neighbor of yours on this map. Parsons didn't just dabble; he poured his money and his devotion into it, and for a time he practically kept the American branch alive. Now, to be clear, none of this requires you to believe that a single spell ever worked. What's documented is the organization itself: its founders, its charters, its degrees, its rituals, and the very real, very human people who devoted their lives to it. The magic is a matter of faith.
