Olmec Heads

FILE DATE 1200 BC
CROSS-REFS 02
STATUS NEVER CLOSED
SUMMARY
Colossal basalt faces in the Mexican jungle, carved by a culture with no known predecessor.
FULL DOSSIER
The Olmec colossal heads: seventeen basalt heads up to 50 tons, carved by Mesoamerica's oldest known civilization (San Lorenzo/La Venta, c. 1200-400 BC), moved 60+ km from their quarries without wheels or draft animals — documented, and genuinely unexplained in method. The lore layer reads African features into the faces (van Sertima's 'They Came Before Columbus'); Mesoamericanists reject pre-Columbian contact for total absence of Old World artifacts, crops, or DNA, and note the features match local Gulf Coast populations. The heads are the hard part; the lore answers the easy part.
