Imagine you're a scientist, well-credentialed, Cambridge-trained, a Fellow of the Royal Society's world, and you publish a book with an idea so heretical that the editor of the most prestigious journal on Earth writes that it is 'the best candidate for burning there has been for many years.' A new chemical crystallizes for the first time with great difficulty; after that, Sheldrake claims, labs worldwide find it crystallizes faster, because the form has 'learned.' So here's where it gets strange. Sheldrake extends this to behavior and memory. If rats learn a maze in London, he argues, rats in New York should learn the same maze a little quicker afterward, tapping into a shared reservoir of habit. Memory, in his picture, isn't stored only in your brain; your brain tunes into it, like a radio receiving a station rather than a hard drive holding a file. He points to his own experiments on the 'sense of being stared at' and on dogs who seem to know when their owners are coming home. But here's the part you need to hear plainly. Mainstream science rejects morphic resonance, and the reasons are substantial, not just snobbery. Physicists say it violates known laws and proposes fields no instrument has ever detected. Biologists say inheritance and development are already well explained by genetics, epigenetics, and molecular biology, with no missing gap for a memory field to fill. Critics argue his positive results come from small studies, loose protocols, and effects that shrink or vanish when skeptics tighten the controls, the hallmark, they say, of experimenter bias rather than a new force of nature. The famous 1981 Nature editorial by John Maddox called the theory pseudoscience and 'unfalsifiable' in practice. And yet, in fairness, Sheldrake keeps proposing testable predictions, and the burning-a-book response made even some neutral observers uneasy, because science is supposed to answer with data, not fire.
