Mont Pelerin Society

FILE DATE 1947
CROSS-REFS 03

SUMMARY
Economists on a Swiss mountain, drafting — critics say — the operating system now running everywhere.
FULL DOSSIER
The Mont Pelerin Society (founded 1947, Hayek convening 39 economists and thinkers at Mont Pèlerin, Switzerland) organized the neoliberal intellectual project explicitly — its own statement of aims survives. Members (Friedman, Stigler, Buchanan) and allied think tanks (IEA, Heritage, Atlas network) moved its program into governments over four decades, a trajectory documented by both admirers and critics (Mirowski's histories). The node is the archive's best example of a self-described society of ideas actually steering policy — openly, slowly, and effectively.
