Here's a claim that sounds like science fiction but is taken seriously by real physicists. Every time a quantum event could go two ways, both happen - the universe splits, and there is now a copy of you in each branch. That is the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, and I want to walk you through where the real science ends and the campfire story begins, because the gap between them is huge and people love to blur it.
Start with what is DOCUMENTED. In 1957, a Princeton graduate student named Hugh Everett III published a paper offering a radical fix to the biggest headache in quantum physics: the measurement problem. A quantum system, before you look, exists in a 'superposition' - many possibilities at once. The old textbook rule said that when you measure it, the wave function 'collapses' to a single outcome. But nothing in the equations explains how or why that collapse happens. Everett's move was elegant and jarring: get rid of collapse entirely. Keep the equations exactly as they are, and take them literally. If the math never collapses, then every possible outcome is real - each in its own branch of a vast, ever-splitting wave function. This is genuine, respected physics. It is discussed in serious philosophy-of-physics scholarship and defended by working physicists today. You are not being sold a hoax when someone tells you many-worlds is real science.
So here's where it gets strange - and where I need you to watch the seam carefully. The internet took Everett's idea and welded it onto something he never claimed. You'll hear it called 'timeline slips': the notion that you can slide from one branch into another, that a shift between worlds is why you remember things differently, why the Mandela Effect happens, why reality feels 'off.' That is SPECULATION and, frankly, it is not what the physics says. In the actual many-worlds interpretation, the branches do not merge and you do not hop between them. Once the wave function branches, those worlds are effectively sealed off from each other - they decohere. There is no doorway back. Your memories stay in your branch. Nothing in Everett's math offers a mechanism for a person to 'wake up' in a different timeline and notice a changed logo or a changed spelling.
I'm not here to sneer at the legend, because I understand its pull. It takes a real, mind-bending piece of physics and offers it as an explanation for that uncanny feeling that the world has shifted. But the honest version is this: many-worlds is a serious answer to a real problem in quantum theory. 'We're slipping between timelines' is folklore wearing a lab coat. Hold those two apart.
