The Khazarian Myth

A recycled antisemitic legend dressed in genetics it gets wrong. Historians and geneticists reject it; it circulates anyway, wearing the Protocols' old coat.

You are about to hear a claim that sounds, on the surface, like a dry footnote from a history seminar. Stay with it, because that scholarly costume is exactly the disguise. The claim is called the KHAZARIAN MYTH, and its real job is not to teach you history — it is to tell millions of Jewish people that they are not who they are. Here is the MYTH, and I am labeling it a myth on purpose: it asserts that Ashkenazi Jews — Jews with roots in Central and Eastern Europe — are not 'really' Jewish at all, but instead the descendants of the Khazars, a medieval Turkic people whose elite reportedly converted to Judaism around the 8th to 10th centuries. From that half-truth about a real kingdom, the myth builds a lie: that modern Jews therefore have no genuine ancestral or historical connection to the Jewish people or to the land of Israel, and so their identity — and their claims — can be dismissed as fraudulent. Now the DOCUMENTED history. Yes, a Khazar kingdom existed. Yes, some conversion likely occurred among its ruling class — that part is genuine, if murky, medieval history. But the sweeping 'strong' claim, that Ashkenazi Jews descend primarily or overwhelmingly from Khazars, is rejected by mainstream historians and, decisively, by population genetics. Multiple genetic studies place Ashkenazi ancestry substantially in the ancient Near East, mixed with European populations — not in a wholesale Turkic origin. The scholarly consensus treats the strong Khazar thesis as unsupported. So how did a fringe hypothesis become a hate tool? Part of the story runs through Arthur Koestler's 1976 book 'The Thirteenth Tribe,' which popularized the Khazar-origin idea. Koestler's own stated aim was actually to argue AGAINST antisemitism — he reasoned that if Jews weren't 'Semites,' antisemitism lost its target. It was a flawed argument, and it backfired catastrophically. Antisemites seized the book and inverted its purpose, using it not to disarm hatred but to arm it — to 'prove' Jews are impostors with no right to their own identity or homeland. Today the Khazarian myth is a staple of extremist and conspiracist propaganda, a pseudohistorical delegitimization weapon dressed as genealogy. Understand the pattern, because it is the whole point of inoculation: take one real, obscure fact, inflate it past what evidence allows, and use the result to erase a people's belonging.
