JAL 1628
SUMMARY
A 747 captain over Alaska, shadowed by something twice his size. The FAA confiscated, then confirmed, the tapes.
FULL DOSSIER
It's November 17, 1986, and you're the captain of a Japan Air Lines cargo flight — Flight 1628, a big Boeing 747 hauling French wine across the top of the world. Your name is Kenju Terauchi, and you're a veteran, a former fighter pilot with thousands of hours. You're cruising over the frozen dark of eastern Alaska, near Fort Yukon, when you notice lights off your left side. At first you think it's military traffic. But the lights don't behave like traffic. They pace you. They move in front of you. And when two of them swing close, you feel the heat, and you see them — arrays of glowing jets or nozzles, holding formation with your jumbo jet.
And then, Terauchi would say, a shape behind them: something enormous, a silhouette he described as gigantic, larger than his own 747, drifting in the night sky.
Now here's why this case is taken seriously even by careful people. It's documented, and it involves radar and government records. Terauchi radioed Anchorage air traffic control. Controllers on the ground worked the situation in real time. The Federal Aviation Administration investigated. Military radar and FAA radar data were pulled. And the story didn't stay a rumor, because an FAA division chief named John Callahan later came forward publicly, saying he had the data and the cockpit-and-controller recordings, and that they were reviewed at a high level. A controller named Carl Henley was among those handling the traffic that night. This is a case with paperwork.
So here's where it gets strange. The FAA's own analysis was genuinely mixed, and honesty demands we sit in that gray zone. Some radar returns near the aircraft were logged; others were ambiguous. The FAA ultimately could not confirm a solid object with certainty — and the official public position leaned toward unexplained radar returns and possible equipment or interpretation issues, rather than declaring a craft. Skeptics offered candidates too: the bright planets Jupiter and Mars were unusually placed that night, and could account for the initial lights; ice-crystal reflections and split radar returns could explain some readings.
But here's the part most people don't know. What makes JAL 1628 so durable isn't a grainy photo — there is no clear photo. It's the caliber of the witness and the existence of the record. A seasoned pilot, professional controllers, an FAA investigation, and a named official willing to attach his reputation to the data. Documented does not mean "proven alien." It means we can point to the file. And the file says: something happened over Alaska that the experts could not fully explain.
The case sits alongside the other heavyweight modern encounters investigators cite — the naval story of the uss-nimitz Tic Tac, and the broader phenomenon of mass-sightings where many trained observers report the same thing at once.
You'll find JAL 1628 on the map high over interior Alaska, near Fort Yukon and Anchorage — a cold, empty stretch of sky where a jumbo jet flew beside something no one has ever fully named.
