Seventy-two spirits, bound and cataloged. A phonebook, magicians joke, that answers.

Imagine an old book that claims to hold the names, the ranks, and the secret seals of seventy-two demons, complete with instructions on how to summon them, bind them, and command them to do your bidding. It sounds like a prop from a horror film. But this book is real, it has a traceable history stretching back centuries, and scholars can tell you almost exactly where it came from. Its name is the Goetia. So let's document it. The full title is 'Ars Goetia,' and it forms the first and most notorious section of a larger grimoire, a book of magic, called the 'Lesser Key of Solomon,' or in Latin the 'Lemegeton.' The compilation as we know it took shape in the seventeenth century, but its roots run deeper. Its catalogue of demons descends almost directly from an earlier list, the 'Pseudomonarchia Daemonum,' published in 1577 by the Dutch physician Johann Weyer, who was himself drawing on older manuscript traditions. So the Goetia isn't a single author's invention; it's a river fed by many older streams, a textbook of medieval and Renaissance demonology copied, edited, and recompiled across generations. At its heart is the roster: seventy-two spirits, each with a title, a President, a Duke, a King, a Marquis, a personality, and a unique sigil, a magical seal, that the operator was to engrave and use to call it forth. Names like Bael, Paimon, Asmoday, and Andromalius fill its pages. Around this catalogue sit the ritual instructions: the magic circle to protect the magician, the triangle to contain the spirit, and the conjurations to be spoken aloud. Now here's where it connects to our map. For most of its life the Goetia circulated only in handwritten manuscripts, largely unknown to the public. That changed in 1904. A scholar of the occult named Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers, a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, translated and edited the text from manuscripts held in the British Museum. And the man who paid for it and published it, adding his own introduction and giving it a wider audience, was none other than Aleister Crowley, your neighbor on this map. That 1904 Mathers-Crowley edition is the reason the Goetia is famous today. And this is worth saying plainly: none of this requires you to believe a demon ever answered. What's documented is the literature, the manuscripts, the 1577 precursor, the seventeenth-century compilation, and the 1904 printed edition. The seventy-two spirits live on the page.
