Here's a thought that can keep you up at night. What if something you clearly remember was quietly deleted from the record, and everyone around you insisted it never existed? George Orwell gave that fear a name. In his 1949 novel he called it the 'memory hole' - a little slot on the wall where inconvenient documents were dropped and burned, so the past could be rewritten to fit the present. It was fiction. But the reason it stuck with people for seventy-five years is that the fiction was built on something real. So let's separate what is DOCUMENTED from what is LEGEND. What is documented is that institutions really do alter records. Governments have destroyed files. Encyclopedias and news sites make silent edits - a fact changes, a paragraph vanishes, and there is no note saying it happened. That is why archivists and 'diff' trackers exist: to catch the stealth edit. The U.S. National Archives exists precisely because, without a fixed record, memory becomes negotiable. This part is not paranoia. It is the ordinary, sometimes uncomfortable, machinery of how the past gets managed. But here's where it gets strange. There is a second thing people mean when they talk about the memory hole, and it is much bigger. It is the FEELING that reality itself is being edited around you - that not just a file, but your own memory, is being overwritten by some outside hand. Psychologists have a word for the interpersonal version of this: gaslighting. It began as the title of a 1938 play, later films, in which a husband dims the gaslights and then tells his wife she is imagining it, methodically making her doubt her own perception. Clinicians and sociologists now use the term for a real pattern of manipulation in which someone is made to distrust their own memory. That is documented. It happens between people. What is SPECULATION - and this matters - is the jump from 'a person can be gaslit' or 'a file can be edited' to 'the whole world is being gaslit at once.' There is no evidence for a coordinated, reality-wide memory erasure. The honest science says something quieter and, frankly, stranger: human memory is reconstructive. You do not replay the past like a tape. You rebuild it every time, and it can be nudged. So a small real thing - an edited page, a manipulative partner - can feel like proof of a vast one.
