FULL DOSSIER

Picture a robed figure standing on a windswept plain at dawn, arms raised toward the rising sun between two towering grey stones. You know this image. It's on book covers and in movies. It feels ancient, timeless, true. Here's the twist: almost everything in that picture is about 300 years old, not 3,000. And that gap — between the real Druids and the imagined ones — is the whole story of this node. So let's start with what's actually documented, which is frustratingly little. The Druids were real. They were the learned class of Iron Age Celtic society across Gaul and Britain — priests, judges, teachers, keepers of law and lore. But here's the problem for us historians: the Druids themselves wrote nothing down about their beliefs. By deliberate practice, their knowledge was memorized and passed on orally. So virtually everything we know about them comes secondhand, mostly from their enemies. Our best documented source is Julius Caesar, who described the Druids of Gaul in his 'Commentaries on the Gallic War' around 50 BCE. He wrote that they oversaw sacrifices, believed in the immortality of the soul, and — in one lurid passage — burned human victims inside giant wicker figures. But remember: Caesar was conquering these people. Roman writers like Tacitus and Pliny added more, some of it plausible, some of it propaganda. That's the honest state of the evidence: a real priesthood, glimpsed only through the words of the Romans who were busy destroying them. So here's where it gets strange. Fast forward to the 1700s and 1800s, and Britain falls in love with the Druids all over again — but with a version it largely invented. This is what scholars call the 'Druid Revival,' a romantic, patriotic reimagining. And the central figure you need to meet is an antiquarian named William Stukeley. Stukeley was a careful field surveyor — genuinely important to archaeology — but he had a big, wrong idea. In the 1740s he declared that Stonehenge, the neighbor node right beside this one on our map, was a Druid temple. It was a beautiful theory. It was also completely mistaken. Stonehenge was built by Neolithic and Bronze Age people starting around 3000 BCE — thousands of years BEFORE the Celtic Druids ever existed. The Druids no more built Stonehenge than you built the pyramids. But the idea stuck, because it was irresistible. From Stukeley flowed a whole tradition: fraternal Druid orders, white robes, solstice ceremonies at the stones, and eventually the mystical notion that Druids tapped invisible earth energies — connecting them to another neighbor on our map, the ley-lines. So hold both truths at once. The real Druids: documented dimly, through hostile Roman eyes. The Druids you picture: a gorgeous 18th-century romance layered on top, tying them to a monument they never touched. Find them on the map between Stonehenge — the temple they were wrongly given — and the ley-lines that later legend ran beneath their feet.
