Maimonides Medical Center ran the experiments for a decade. The results still itch.

Imagine you're asleep in a small room in a Brooklyn hospital, wires taped to your scalp, and down the hall, behind a closed door, a stranger is staring at a painting, trying with everything they have to push that image into your dreaming mind. In the morning you describe your dream to a researcher. And sometimes, unsettlingly, the details line up. That was the premise of one of the strangest research programs in the history of American science, and here's the thing, it really happened, in a real laboratory, with real scientists. So here's where it gets strange. In the 1960s and into the 1970s, at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, two psychiatrists, Montague Ullman and Stanley Krippner, ran a series of formal experiments on what they called dream telepathy. The setup was careful, at least by the standards of the day. A sleeping volunteer, the receiver, was monitored for REM sleep. In a distant room, a sender concentrated on a randomly chosen art print, a vivid painting picked to be emotionally striking. When the instruments showed the sleeper entering REM, an experimenter woke them and recorded the dream. Later, independent judges compared the dream reports to the target images, trying to match them without knowing which was which. Ullman and Krippner reported hits, matches that, by their statistics, seemed to beat chance. They published books and papers. For a while, to a certain kind of reader, it looked like proof that minds could touch across space while one of them slept. It fed directly into the era's fascination with the paranormal. Now, here's where the honest scientist in you has to slow down, because this is the part the campfire version always leaves out. The Maimonides results did not hold up. When other researchers tried to replicate the dream-telepathy effect, they largely failed to reproduce it. Critics, including psychologists who specialize in how easily we fool ourselves, pointed to serious problems: judges who could pick up subtle cues, statistical methods that were shaky, and the sheer flexibility of dreams, which are so rich and rambling that you can find a match to almost any image if you look hard enough. A later meta-analysis and repeated critiques concluded the evidence simply wasn't strong enough to support genuine telepathy. Extraordinary claims, and this one didn't clear the bar. So hold both truths at once. The experiments were real, conducted by credentialed people who believed they were onto something. And the claim they were testing, mind-to-mind contact during sleep, remains unproven, undermined by failed replication and criticism. That's not a sneer at the people who dreamed those dreams.
