Crypto AG
SUMMARY
The Swiss cipher company trusted by 120 governments — owned, it emerged, by the CIA the whole time.
FULL DOSSIER
Imagine you run a government. A small one, maybe, in Latin America or the Middle East. You know foreign spies are always listening, so you do the smart thing — you buy the best encryption money can buy, from neutral, trustworthy Switzerland. A company called Crypto AG. Their machines scramble your most secret messages into gibberish. You sleep well.
You shouldn't have.
Because here's the truth, and it is documented, confirmed, and staggering. For decades, Crypto AG was secretly OWNED by the CIA and West German intelligence, the BND. The company that sold 'unbreakable' code machines to more than a hundred and twenty countries had been rigged from the inside. The spies weren't breaking the encryption. They wrote it. They owned the factory.
They called it Operation Rubicon. And it is one of the most audacious intelligence coups in the history of the world.
So here's how it worked. Crypto AG's engineers built the machines with deliberately weakened algorithms — backdoors baked into the math. Your message looked like perfect nonsense to anyone snooping the wire. But to the analysts at Fort Meade and in Germany, it might as well have been printed in plain text. They read it all. Diplomatic cables. Military orders. The private panic of foreign presidents during coups and wars.
And here's the part that makes your stomach drop. This wasn't a few years. This ran from the 1970s into the 2000s. During the Iran hostage crisis, during the Falklands War, during the hunt after the Berlin discotheque bombing — American intelligence was reading the traffic. Countries that trusted Switzerland's famous neutrality were, in effect, mailing their secrets straight to Washington and Bonn.
Now, this was whispered about for years — a decades-old rumor in the intelligence community, a conspiracy theory people rolled their eyes at. But here's where it stops being a theory. In February 2020, The Washington Post, German broadcaster ZDF, and Swiss television published a joint investigation built on the CIA's own classified internal history of the operation. The documents named the program. Rubicon. The spies had written down their own confession, and it leaked. This is not speculation. This is the proven record.
The CIA reportedly called it 'the intelligence coup of the century.' And you have to sit with what that means: an entire industry of trust, weaponized. A neutral country's flag used as camouflage.
On the map, this one sits at the dark heart of the signals-intelligence cluster. Follow one thread and you arrive at FIVE EYES, the alliance of nations that pool exactly this kind of harvested secret. Follow another and you reach NUMBERS STATIONS, those eerie shortwave voices reciting code to spies in the field. Crypto AG is where the machine met the message. Find it near the center of the surveillance web.
