Cicada 3301
SUMMARY
The internet's most elegant puzzle, recruiting for no one who ever identified themselves.
FULL DOSSIER
Cicada 3301 ran three public recruitment puzzles (2012-14) spanning steganography, Mayan numerals, Anglo-Saxon runes, a privately-printed book (Liber Primus, mostly unsolved), and physical posters on three continents — tradecraft implying resources and coordination. No organization ever claimed it; alleged solvers report signing PGP-verified NDAs. Theories: intelligence recruitment, cryptoanarchist collective, or ARG. Links the Voynich (unsolved text lineage) and numbers stations (anonymous signaling).
