Cash-Landrum Incident
SUMMARY
A diamond of fire over a Texas road, ringed by Chinooks. The radiation burns were real enough to sue over.
FULL DOSSIER
It's the night of December 29th, 1980, and you're driving home through the piney woods northeast of Houston, Texas. There are three of you in the car: Betty Cash, her friend Vickie Landrum, and Vickie's seven-year-old grandson Colby. It's a dark, cold two-lane road near Huffman. And then, up ahead, above the treetops, you see it.
A huge, diamond-shaped object. Hanging in the air. Belching flame from its underside and throwing off so much heat that you can feel it through the windshield.
Here's what is documented, because this is one of the rare UFO cases with a paper trail and medical records. The three witnesses said the craft was so hot and bright they got out of the car. Betty Cash, who stood outside the longest, reportedly touched the car door and later said the metal was hot enough to leave a mark. And then, they said, the sky filled with helicopters. Not one or two. They counted what they described as roughly two dozen military-style helicopters, including large twin-rotor Chinooks, seeming to escort or surround the object as it moved off.
So here's where it gets strange, and genuinely disturbing. In the hours and days that followed, all three became sick. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches. Betty Cash got the worst of it: burning skin, blisters, patches of hair falling out, swollen eyes that she couldn't open. She was hospitalized. Doctors described symptoms that looked, to more than one physician, like exposure to ionizing radiation, though a definitive cause was never proven.
But here's the part most people don't know. The witnesses, believing the helicopters were American military, sued the United States government for damages. The case went to federal court in Houston. And in 1986, it was dismissed, because investigators for the Army, Air Force, Navy, and NASA all testified under oath that the United States operated no such diamond-shaped craft, and that no aircraft matching the witnesses' description was theirs. In other words, the government's defense was essentially, 'We can't be liable, because it wasn't ours.'
Now, the speculation. UFO researchers, including investigators from MUFON and writer John Schuessler, who compiled the fullest account, argued the object might have been a secret nuclear-powered prototype. Skeptics counter that the medical evidence, while real, doesn't cleanly match radiation sickness, and that no independent radar or third-party confirmation of the helicopter armada ever surfaced.
What is not in dispute: three ordinary people got sick that night, the illness was medically documented, and the U.S. government stood up in court and said the craft wasn't theirs. That is a strange combination of facts to leave hanging in the Texas dark.
So where does Cash-Landrum sit on our map? Right at the intersection of the folklore of black helicopters, those unmarked aircraft people swear shadow secret operations, and the darker legend of UFO crash retrieval, the idea that somewhere, someone is flying, and hiding, machines that don't officially exist.
