Bretton Woods
SUMMARY
Forty-four nations in a New Hampshire hotel, deciding whose paper the world would trust.
FULL DOSSIER
Picture a quiet resort hotel tucked into the White Mountains of New Hampshire in July 1944. World War II is still raging. And for three weeks, 730 delegates from 44 nations gather in this one building to answer a terrifying question: when this war finally ends, how do we keep the global economy from collapsing all over again the way it did in the 1930s? This is Bretton Woods, node bretton-woods, and almost everything about it is DOCUMENTED, on the record, and genuinely enormous.
Here's what actually happened. From July 1 to 22, 1944, at the Mount Washington Hotel, delegates hammered out a blueprint for the entire postwar financial world. Two giant minds dominated the room: John Maynard Keynes representing Britain, and Harry Dexter White representing the United States. White's vision, backed by America's overwhelming economic power, largely won.
Out of that conference came two institutions you still hear about on the news every week: the International Monetary Fund, the IMF, and the World Bank. The IMF would help stabilize currencies and lend to countries in crisis. The World Bank would help rebuild a shattered world.
And here's the keystone, the piece that ties this whole map together. They built a system of fixed exchange rates. Every member currency was pegged to the U.S. dollar. And the dollar, and only the dollar, was pegged to gold, at 35 dollars an ounce. In one stroke, the American dollar became the anchor of the entire planet's money. That is the moment the dollar was crowned king, the foundation beneath node petrodollar and node opec-deal decades later.
So here's where it gets strange, and where the system's fatal flaw was hiding in plain sight. For the whole thing to work, the U.S. had to promise that any foreign government could show up with dollars and swap them for real gold. That promise held as long as America's gold reserves matched the dollars floating around the world. But they didn't stay matched. The U.S. printed and spent, Vietnam, the Great Society, global trade, and by the late 1960s far more dollars existed than there was gold in the vaults to back them. Foreign governments, especially France, started demanding gold. The run was on.
And here's the part most people don't know: Bretton Woods didn't die by treaty or vote. It was killed in a single televised announcement. On August 15, 1971, President Richard Nixon went on live TV and 'closed the gold window,' suspending dollar-for-gold convertibility. That moment, node nixon-shock, ended the gold peg forever and launched the age of fiat-money, node fiat-money.
This is DOCUMENTED history, not legend, and it's worth separating from the darker conspiracy lore, because the truth is dramatic enough on its own.
Now place it on the map. Bretton Woods sits upstream of nearly everything here. Follow the river forward and you reach node federal-reserve managing this dollar system, node nixon-shock ending the gold link, and eventually the petrodollar filling the vacuum it left behind.
