Antikythera Mechanism

A bronze computer from the wrong millennium, pulled from the sea floor.

In the spring of 1901, sponge divers working a shipwreck off the tiny Greek island of Antikythera hauled up a lump of corroded bronze and rotted wood, about the size of a thick book. It modeled the Moon's irregular speed across the sky using an ingenious pin-and-slot gearing that reproduced ancient theories of lunar motion. It predicted solar and lunar eclipses. It showed the phases of the Moon. It even kept a calendar of the four-year cycle of the ancient Greek games, including the Olympics, and there is strong evidence it displayed the motions of the five planets known to antiquity. All of that, geared into bronze, by hand, before the birth of Christ. Now — this is the part that matters for a place like the one you're standing in. For a century, people have hunted for 'out-of-place artifacts,' objects supposedly too advanced for their time, and used them as evidence of lost super-civilizations or ancient astronauts. Most of those claims collapse the moment you examine them. The Antikythera Mechanism is the one that DIDN'T.
