Every new frequency gets a folklore. This one arrived, notably, in a bad year.

FULL DOSSIER

So picture this. It's the spring of 2020. The world is locked down, everybody's scared, and you're scrolling your phone at 2 a.m. looking for answers. And that's when you see it: a post claiming the new 5G towers going up around your city aren't just for faster downloads. They're spreading the virus. Maybe they ARE the virus. And here's the thing you need to understand right away, because it matters: that claim is false. Flatly, provably false. But the fear it unleashed was very real, and it burned. Let's separate what's documented from what's legend. 5G is the fifth generation of cellular technology. It runs on radio waves, part of the electromagnetic spectrum called non-ionizing radiation. Non-ionizing is the key phrase. It doesn't carry enough energy to break chemical bonds or damage your DNA the way, say, X-rays or a nuclear blast can. And viruses? Viruses are biological particles. They spread through respiratory droplets, through contact, through the air between two people. Radio waves cannot manufacture, carry, or transmit a virus. There is no mechanism. It's like blaming your microwave for a letter arriving in the mail. The categories don't even touch. So here's where it gets strange, and honestly, dark. This wasn't just a bad idea people argued about online. In April 2020, across the United Kingdom, cell towers started burning. Dozens of them. Telecom engineers, people just doing their jobs keeping hospitals and families connected during a pandemic, were harassed and threatened in the street. Some towers that got torched weren't even 5G. People were destroying the very infrastructure they were using to spread the theory in the first place. But here's the part most people don't know. Why did it stick? Why THIS fear? Because the timing was almost too perfect. 5G was rolling out fast in 2019 and 2020, right as an invisible, terrifying illness swept the globe. Two new, poorly understood things arriving at once, and the human brain is a pattern machine. It hates coincidence. It wants a villain you can see, a tower you can point at, something you can fight, instead of a virus you can't. That's not stupidity. That's grief and fear looking for a shape. And I want to be fair here, because the fear didn't come from nowhere. People have had real, legitimate questions about cell radiation for decades, and we'll get to those, because they connect directly to the towers themselves. That's the honest conversation, the one about actual radio-frequency exposure and safety limits. The 5G-COVID link is a different animal entirely. It's the moment a reasonable unease got hijacked by a claim with zero evidence and catastrophic consequences. So when you look at the map of this story, 5G Panic doesn't sit alone. It's wired directly into its quieter, older neighbor: The Towers, the broader worry about whether the antennas humming above your neighborhood are doing anything to your body at all. Follow that line, because that's where the documented science actually lives. And that's where we're headed next.
